JUNE PROGRAM: Olivia Swaan - Irish Harpist & Singer

by Perry Korszen

The June Luncheon Program started with President George Tracy, assisted by Scholarship Director Claire Power, presenting the final two SMOSF scholarships for the year to Kathryn Beck of Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School and Cassandra Golembeski of Riverview High School.

The program continued with a wonderful performance by Olivia Swaan, an accomplished and well-known harpist and singer of Irish music.  With “We are the makers of music, the dreamers of dreams” she prefaced each of her captivating harp and vocal pieces with beautiful poetry and introduced her audience of 117 luncheon participants to Ireland’s heart and soul.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Olivia studied the harp at the “Irish College of Music” at the age of 12, and toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States.  She now resides in Sarasota, and is President of the Artist Series Concerts Friends.

Olivia’s light and tender voice, her recital of poetry, and the graceful sounds of her harp kept her audience spellbound and wishing for time to stand still.  She captivated everyone with her renditions of “Steal away”. “I talk to Trees” and “The Salley Gardens, as did her closing with “Danny Boy.”
We thank Margarete and Russ Wiltshire for introducing us to Olivia Swaan and her very special music.

Olivia donated the receipts from the sale at the luncheon of her latest DVD album, “The Swan in the Evening” to the Scholarship Fund and we extend our sincere thanks to her.

You're a Grand Old Flag

Six months ago we set out to create a special event at Patriot Plaza to celebrate the 239th Birthday of Old Glory. What resulted from our efforts was "You're a Grand Old Flag", a ceremony intended to be entertaining, inspirational and educational for all. From all accounts...we hit our mark and I applaud your efforts for making that possible.

While the late afternoon storm may have discouraged some from attending , it is estimated that we still had close to 2000 people in attendance. With the help of our military chaplains, the weather cleared and people arrived in time to pay their respects to those killed and injured in Orlando earlier in the day; listen to a truly magnificent performance by Gloria Musicae and The POPS Orchestra for Bradenton and Sarasota; and watch American Legion Post 159 perform a Flag Retirement Ceremony with the help of Girl Scout Troop 586 and Young Marines from Venice Middle School.

Behind the scenes were photographers, film makers, audio technicians, ushers, golf cart operators, docents, and a rain soaked group of parking attendants comprised of Cadets from SMA Middle Preparatory School and Student Veterans from USF Sarasota-Manatee...all doing their assigned tasks without complaint.

And who can forget the magnificent support provided by the Cemetery staff who covered the bases that we missed and helped clean up at the end.

A real team effort for which I am most grateful and to which I proudly extend my sincere thanks.

THANK YOU, ALL!!
